Located in the wine region of Burgundy, Cluny is known for its Benedictine Abbey which was built in the early 10th century. It was the largest monument of its size for its time and was conceived with complete austerity and sobriety in mind. Likewise the flatware which bears its name is void of any superfluous decoration. Not unlike the Chinon pattern, the shape is called "fiddle back" as it follows the contours of a violin. The CLUNY pattern was created as a synergy between the physical and the spiritual and describes a certain attitude towards food: essential to nourish God's creatures but not to be indulged to excess. The Benedictine order of the Abbey of Cluny was closed in 1790 during the French revolution but re-opened a few years later. Also referred to as UNI to describe its total lack of decor, this pattern first appeared in 1962. The plane surfaces lend themselves perfectly to monogramming and other types of personalization. Christofle produced the same pattern in sterling until 1958 under the name of ANJOU. Purely Louis XIV in style, CLUNY will be at home in minimalist architecture as well as act as a perfect contrast to very ornate china and elaborately-cut stemware. CLUNY exists in both silverplate and sterling versions. The simplicity of the design makes it one of the most affordable patterns of the range.
